Amaryllis Tuesday: March 9

This will be the last amaryllis post of 2021, as the flowers are beginning to fade.

But they kept me company through our snowy February and saw me through to the earliest signs of Spring.  After a rainy close to February, last week was sunny and this week promises some days of sun and actual warmth, capped off by our Spring forward on the 14th.  The days are gaining light at both sunrise and sunset, a happy development indeed.

Amaryllis Tuesday: March 2

The second pod of flowers opened toward the end of last week and it’s delivered five pretty flowers.  These blooms, the steadily melting snow, the quickening pace of vaccines in the U.S., and some sunny days have lifted my spirits.

That’s happy!

Amaryllis Tuesday: February 23

This year’s amaryllis is a candy-striped pink and white flower.  Two pods emerged and the first had three flowers.  Tucked behind these beauties is another pod that looks ready to bloom as the week closes out.

I don’t think that both pods will be open with flowers at the same time but that is okay by me.
In a cold and snowy February, it’s been nice to know that pretty flowers will steadily come my way, a harbinger of the Spring that is on the horizon.

Amaryllis Tuesday: February 16

Over the last few days, the first three flowers have emerged on my plant and the pink and white striped flowers are lovely when they greet me in the morning.

All of our yards are filled with snow; overnight there was rain (happily, it was too warm for ice or snow) and its flowing in the streets because it cannot sink into the ground.  Another Winter snowstorm is forecast for this week....February isn’t planning an easy departure.
But for all of that, these flowers symbolize hope and today I hear that message load and clear.

Amaryllis Tuesday: February 9

This flower is a bright spot in the midst of my cold and snowy February and I am grateful for its daily reminder to keep the faith.

It’s been planted for 6 weeks and a flower is nearing.
I’m cheering for you, splendid flower.

Amaryllis Tuesday: February 2

In this Groundhog Day of a pandemic year, the amaryllis is evidence that small change does happen.  Week to week, the growth is sure and steady.

An amaryllis bulb usually sees me through the darkest part of the Winter.  This year’s bulb is assigned that task and is also sustaining me as I wait for my turn at a vaccine.  The bulb’s steady weekly progress reminds me that a mixture of hope and patience will see me through.  These days, that's an important lesson.

Amaryllis Tuesday: January 26

As I wait out the days of my quarantine, it seems fitting that the amaryllis waits with me, each of us marking the day with a bit more daylight to soak up.

The morning sunlight in this window is good for all the growing things and some days I stand here to soak it all in.

By the end of this week, we’ll be gaining an extra minute of daylight in the morning and the evening and I find that though tespecially cheering.  I expect that the amaryllis feels the same way.

Amaryllis Tuesday: January 19

Tomorrow is Inauguration Day; the day after that my boy returns to his college.  Amidst it all, a pandemic rages on, seemingly unabated.  I am teaching in a hybrid learning model that is the hardest teaching I have every done, work that leaves me exhausted in body, mind, and soul.  There is a lot on my mind this month and this week seems to be filled especially with an expectancy that feels enormous.

And still there is my little bulb, soaking in the light and cheered on by my Winter garden to bring forth a beautiful flower.
Though it seems quiet, when I look close, I can see growth in the green stem.

There is hope in its promise of a flower.  That's happy.

Amaryllis Tuesday: January 12

January has proven itself to be full of events and in the midst of all that, I nearly lost sight of the weekly amaryllis photo.  But here is my bulb showing a bit of a green stem if you look closely.

The purpose of this flower bulb is to mark the cold, dark months of the Winter, as I look eagerly toward the light and then warmth of Spring.
When I’ve greeted the bulb each morning in the last few days I have also thought about the fact that each day’s growth places us just a tiny bit closer to the arrival of Inauguration Day and the swearing-in of a competent and capable set of leaders.  I am ready.  The nation is ready.  It’s been a long, long wait and the amaryllis reminds me to hold fast to the promise of the future.

Your Weekly Amaryllis: January 5

Just one week in to its planting, the amaryllis is still getting used to its pot.  There is probably a metaphor in that information but I’m busily gearing up for a return to teaching and so it will take me a bit to make sense of it all.

I have Zoom meetings today and then remote learning classes for the rest of the week.
On January 11, we return to our hybrid model of learning and I’ll see half of my students on campus for the week.  The time off has been restful and good.  It was a much needed break in this pandemic school year.  I return ready to learn with my students and to chart a path forward in this year of years.  In the coming weeks, the amaryllis will help to cheer me on.

Your Weekly Amaryllis: Just Planted

For Christmas, T gave me an amaryllis bulb from Burpee Seed Company.  It is one of my most favorite traditions to plant this flower in the cold and dark Winter season.  I planted this year’s bulb yesterday.  It sits among the happy plants in the Southeast window, where it will soak up all the morning sunlight that comes along.

And now we wait.

I watch the bulb daily, always mindful that this stark season is the only way forward to flowers, green grass, and the Summer Solstice light that will be all the more welcome for its comparative shortage during the Winter season.

The amaryllis bulb isn’t just for marking time while I daydream about the arrival of Spring.  It reminds me to pause and appreciate this cozy season.  And in this time when so much of what seems normal is on pause, I am grateful and glad to have this usual tradition at hand.

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week 10

This week, as we careen toward Spring Break with growing fear about the COVID 19 pandemic, the bonus bloom delivered.

Four big flowers showed their face.  The bonus bloom has been most lovely to behold especially now, as everyone is so worried about our collective health.

That’s happy!

Your Weekly Amaryllis: Week 9

The bonus flower is looking quite promising and given the sunlight forecast in the next week, I expect a bloom will show soon.

This week has already been a full assortment of chaos, though it it only Wednesday.  Since last week, we’ve been without a shower thanks to a necessary home improvement project (more on that later).  For now, I am appreciating the way this little stem brightens my day.

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week 8

We are in full-time amaryllis watch around here, keeping an eye out for the bonus flower.  The stalk is clearly growing a bit each day and I feel like a bloom is on the horizon.

I’ve had a two flower bloom in the past, but they usually bloom at the same time.  This bonus bloom is really determined to get full credit on its own, giving just a little more patience as I wait for Spring.

That’s happy!

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week 7

With the arrival of a blooming flower, I assumed that last week’s amaryllis posting would be our last.  Then the second stem showed some determination to grow.  I trimmed the first stem (the flowers had begun to fade) and now we are keeping watch on the bonus bloom.

Things are looking hopeful.  That a bonus bloom is looking to hold forth even as the days are growing steadily longer and the temperatures are mild has contributed to my growing Spring fever.  In the next few weeks we may have a flower and Sassafras Spring (the day that I pack up my Winter clothes and declare the arrival of the blooming season).

That’s happy!

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week 6

Last Saturday, we achieved peak flower.

This morning, the amaryllis stem is standing to lean under its own weight, a development that usually occurs after the year’s flower has bloomed.  In this photo, is propped up with my hand.  It’s still lovely to see each day.

And, I’m starting to wonder if another stem is underway.  I’ll watch closely in the next few days because a bonus flower would be most lovely.

If not, my pretty pink flower, the mild weather of February, and the tips of daffodils peaking through Winter’s soil, has me convinced that Spring really is close at hand.

That’s happy!

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week 5

There is a flower about to bloom and each day for the past week, the prospects have been looking quite splendid.  Seen here before the morning light arrives, the flower is nearly open.

When this flower opens, it will feel like an introduction to Spring.  Over the past weekend, the mild weather (for Winter…..it was in the 40s) had me making bold pronouncements about when the garden would be planted. Mid-April, I announced.  We’ll see how things look come that point.  But right now the February sunlight and clearly lengthening days are making me feel giddy.

It feels like a very nice start to the coming Spring.

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week 4

Most years, the week four amaryllis report is filled with despair that the bulb may never bloom.  This year, T confessed that she read the instructions on the box and stored the bulb in a cool place in advance of Christmas day.  As I am known for my unwillingness to turn up the furnace, she claims that cool place was underneath the Christmas tree.  One thing is clear, it wasn’t next to the area heater in her Africa-hot home office.  Here at week four, the very start of a flower can be seen.

Tucked in the greenhouse corner, the tall stalk gets plenty of inspiration from the southern sunlight and neighboring plants. In the next few weeks, we’ll see a flower.  That’s happy!

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week Three

This little stem is really getting after the work of blooming into a flower.  Winter sunlight is my ally in this task and it’s been a fairly sunny Winter so far.

By the time a flower appears, February will be underway and I will have started plotting my transition to Spring.  For me, Winter’s chill feels anticipatory: a chance to tuck under a cozy blanket and  daydream about the blooming seasons to come.  The amaryllis is my ally in this expectant season, a reminder of the warmth and light that is steadily making its way forward.

Your Weekly Amaryllis - Week Two

Sitting amongst the plants in a southern facing window has been a good arrangement for the amaryllis, which is coming along nicely.

Some years, it takes more than a few weeks for progress to show itself and I end up fretting abut the plant on a daily basis.  This year’s amaryllis bulb has quite kindly gotten after the job at hand so that my frets are at a minimum.  That’s happy!
